Meet the Team

Gheorghe Vatafu

Executive Chef

Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, Gheorghe got his culinary start when he was young, learning from his uncle in the kitchen. At 14, Gheorghe began his cooking career at the Intercontinental Hotel in Bucharest while attending culinary school. Gheorghe trained under master chefs and competed around the world, giving him the opportunity to improve his skills and learn about different cultures and cuisines.

Gheorghe moved to the United States and became a US citizen in 2006. He began working at The St. Paul Grill as Sous Chef in 2011 and has worked his way to Executive Chef.

Billy Tam

General Manager

Born and raised in Hong Kong until the age of 14, Billy moved to St. Paul and began working at his family’s restaurant, Ho Ho Gourmet. Billy enlisted in the National Guard in 2001, with his seventh week of basic training coinciding with the events of 9/11. He served his country with distinction, being deployed to Iraq from 2005 to 2007.

Billy’s career in the service industry has seen him serve and bartend throughout downtown Minneapolis and manage various prestigious establishments. With a Mechanical Engineering background from the University of Minnesota, he has managed his family restaurant and several other notable restaurants in the metro area, including Seven Sushi and Steakhouse, Oceanaire Seafood Room, 801 Chophouse, and 801 Fish which he helped open.

Billy’s rich and diverse experience brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to our team, and we are excited to see the exceptional contributions he will make at The St. Paul Grill. We hope you’ll stop in soon to welcome Billy!

Do you have a dress code? What is your dress code?

The St. Paul Grill does not have a formal dress code. While we encourage our guests to be comfortable, we encourage you to dress in business casual attire.

Where are you located?

The St. Paul Grill is located inside The Saint Paul Hotel, at 350 Market Street, St. Paul, MN 55102.

Do you have a happy hour?

We do not have a happy hour.

Are you open for brunch?

Currently, The St. Paul Grill does not offer brunch.

Do you have valet?

Yes, valet service is available at the entrance to The Saint Paul Hotel.

Are there any other parking options?

There are several nearby paid parking options, including Lawson Ramp, Landmark Towers Parking Ramp, and ample street parking in the areas around The St. Paul Grill.

Do you have discounted parking or validate parking?

No, we do not validate parking.

Do you use any 3rd party delivery services like Door Dash?

We do not use 3rd party delivery services. The cuisine at The St. Paul Grill is not meant to travel; it is meant to be enjoyed immediately after being served.

Do we need reservations?

While reservations are not required, they are strongly encouraged, as we often reach service capacity. Reservations can be made on The St. Paul Grill website, or by calling 651.224.7455.

Do you take reservations for the bar area?

Seating in our bar area is open, and first-come-first-served.

Do you have a corkage fee? What is the price?

Yes. Our corkage fee is $35 for a standard 750ml bottle of wine. Wines present on The St. Paul Grill wine list are not permitted.

Why is there a surcharge on my bill?

The 4% surcharge on your bill contributes to the restaurant’s efforts to provide wages and benefits to attract and retain the talented team members who deliver your guest experience. The surcharge applied to your bill is not a server gratuity, is not obligatory, and will be removed from your bill by your server if requested.

Do you have a private event space?

Yes. The St. Paul Grill has a private event space that can accommodate groups of up to 40 guests. Call 651.661.3053 or email spginfo@saintpaulhotel.com with inquiries about private events.

Where can I purchase a gift card?

Gift cards are available on The St. Paul Grill website, at the front desk at The Saint Paul Hotel, or from any team member inside the restaurant.

Do you donate gift cards to charities?

While we are unable to fill all requests for donations and philanthropic opportunities, The St. Paul Grill contributes to several different charities and events each year.
